Some day there will be a park district here in
Leaf River. We want to make sure it is our very own and not part of a
neighboring community’s park district. We could be drawn on their map and after
petition and vote be included in their park district. They would probably elect
the five commissioners that govern the park district from their larger more
populous community. If you are not in an existing park district you may be
included in boundaries of a new proposed park district.
Everyone in the park district pays through tax deductible property tax. A small levy would provide enough money to support many programs. These programs can be run from existing buildings and facilities in the village. Land and building purchases are an option not a necessity. It is our goal to put programs together for the lowest possible cost with the greatest benefit for all. We propose making our park district boundaries the same as the old Leaf River school district. This is now the same as the Bertolet Library district. We would be small but effective and target our citizens and the programs they want. We could realize the benefits in a very short time as these programs could be up and running soon after our park district is formed.
It is important those recreation and enrichment facilities are convenient to fit into today’s busy schedules. We would have a more positive impact on our seniors with less drive time. The more activities here in town draw people and that is more money kept in our local economy. A portion of the sales tax generated at a restaurant or gas station or business stays here in town.
We need to plan our future to perpetuate positive youth programs. This may include sports and social programs plus educational opportunities. The youth of our community are our most valuable resource and our legacy. Action is the Anti-Drug, we can make a difference.
The many programs that a park district can offer for all our citizens of all ages will make Leaf River a more desirable place to live. This in turn will enhance our property values.
With your help and support we can make this happen. We would like to secure the petition and take it to a vote on 2005 ballot. Please plan on joining us at an upcoming quarterly meeting. There will be informational presentations around the community in the next year. We will be raising funds for legal fees and advertisement. Your support is appreciated.
